The profession of nursing is of utmost importance since the beginning of time. However, there is a drastic change and advancement in today’s modern nursing practice. In the healthcare sector, nurses are one of the most significant professions. From emergency department till the Intensive Care Units every department needs the services of nurse to overcome the patients’ healthcare requirements. The purpose of the paper is to develop an understanding of the nursing profession and the role of a nurse in contemporary society. Moreover, the basic interpersonal skills including communication required by a nurse and its importance in the field of nursing is discussed in detail. Moreover, in this paper, the impact of government policies on the compassionate care of the patient and application of compassionate practice to provide care to the patient is discussed. At the end of the paper, the impact of professional regulation and accountability on practice is discussed with the help of recent research articles.
History of Nursing
It is believed that nursing took the form of the profession around 300 A.D. the pinnacle of the Roman Empire. During this era, the empire was of the view to place a hospital in every town. So during that time within those hospitals, there were many nurses that aided in taking care of patients along with doctors (Roux & Halstead, 2017). Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole, and Clara Barton appeared as the main figures that helped in shaping the nursing profession.
Role of the Nurses in the Contemporary Society
Berry and Jacob (2016) states that in the present era, nurses play an imperative role in assessing the wellbeing of an individual. In the past, there were no extensive training programs and women were not given such status in society. But in the present, there is a drastic change in the nursing profession as they are provided with extensive training and women are also provided with equal rights at the workplace. In the present, patients are provided with better hospitals and effective care as compared to the past. They assist doctors in making a proper diagnosis and come up with better treatment plans because of their observation and carefulness (Aponte, 2017). They are present with the patients nearly all the time so that’s why they have a major role in saving the lives of people, as they learn about the upcoming upheaval through the condition of the patient like a heart attack.
Interpersonal Skills and Principles of Competent Nursing
Communication is an essential tool while assessing the patients because of it we are able to know the problem of the patient more accurately. The interpersonal skills of the nurses help them in better communication with the patients to understand their problems and to provide them with the best possible outcomes (Thompson, 2018). The following are the major interpersonal skills that are helpful in the nursing profession:
- To be a good listener
- Should have a good sense of humor
- Should have patience
- Should possess good communication skills
- Should be aware of how to resolve the conflicts
- Should be able to bring effective changes in the lives of patients
Bach and Grant (2015), stated in their book stated that these skills can be implemented in professional settings and help nurses to understand their patients in a better way. As a nurse, the challenges that I might face are to treat the patients equally because a nurse has to attend different patients at a time and there is a shortage of time.
